Cedar Rapids Business Adding Pair of Wind Turbines
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Two more wind turbines soon will dot the sky in the city, though these two, 88-foot-tall turbines are going up without objection in a spot on the city’s far southern edge zoned for light industrial use. Fleck Sales, 11125 High Life Ct. SW, plans to install the turbines, which are considered small wind turbines under the city’s new ordinance that regulates the placement of the alternative-energy machines. The city ordinance allows small turbines in any zoning class with a conditional use permit after review by the City Planning Commission and approval by the city’s Board of Adjustment. The planning commission has placed Fleck’s permit request on its Thursday consent agenda, which is approved without discussion.

Fleck Sales Environmental Efforts
Doing business for over 50 years in the Cedar Rapids area, Fleck Sales Company is proud of its efforts to be a responsible member of the community. As early as 1975 when Fleck originally started redeeming and recycling aluminum cans, the company has adopted many practices including recycling glass, paper, plastic, aluminum, and cardboard which dramatically reduce landfill usage. Fleck also uses 100% electric forklifts, has adopted Hwy 965 from Swisher to Wright Brothers Blvd for trash cleanup, and is installing two wind turbines to offset electric usage.

The City of Cedar Rapids Solid Waste & Recycling Division would like to acknowledge the stewardship and initiative shown by Fleck Sales in their recent litter clean up. This spring the employees at Fleck Sales noticed unsightly litter in the ditches along 6th Street in front of their building. Instead of ignoring the issue, Fleck Sales took the time and energy to find out how to adopt their road and organize a litter clean-up. After being delayed by rain, the employees were finally able to collect 20 bags of litter and various other items from the ditches. "We take pride in being a responsible member of our community and adopting a section of 6th Street was one way we could give back to the City of Cedar Rapids," commented Dudley Fleck, President of Fleck Sales Company. The City of Cedar Rapids Solid Waste & Recycling Division facilitates various litter clean-up activities throughout the city. The recent adoption of 6th Street by Fleck Sales is the first of its kind within the city limits. The program is modeled after the Iowa Department of Transportation’s successful Adopt-a-Highway program, which promotes litter removal from Iowa’s Highways. The City of Cedar Rapids requires participating organizations to commit to two litter clean-ups a year, provides the organization with reflective vests, protective gloves, and garbage bags and collects the materials gathered by the organization. Also, a sign is placed on the street advertising the organization’s commitment to litter removal in the area.
